On Thursday 27th April, me and my class had a bit of a focus group so that we could show our work in progress. Most of the feedback given to me was constructive, strengths and weaknesses if you will.
The positives given to me were that:
It looks pretty good
The movement is effective in the first scene
Good typography use
The silhouettes stand out a bit and look too realistic.
In addition to this, my blog for this assignment is well organised.
The weaknesses given to me were that:
Not consistent in parts
Most angles are the same throughout so far
The styles are in the same in parts also
The movement is a bit too fast
The things that can be improved are:
Changing the background, from morning to night
The person could run really fast
I would stand by and look and begin to run when somebody is coming after me
The buildings could have detail added to them
The typography could be consistent throughout
There could be humour added to the sequences and more could be added. This is in progress.
I could use different types of movement at different speeds and more action could happen
The person could be illustrated over and look like the illustrated cities.
Maybe even play with the idea of breaking the fourth wall
Slow movement down a bit
This seems like a lot of work at only 5 weeks or so to go before this is handed in for marking and grading. It is unsure whether or not I will be able to formulate this idea, I must research further on for the rest of the weekend and come to a decision on Monday. I like the idea of me running so I might retain that idea.
I like the idea of this movie title sequence below here:
I might do something like this with me running and maybe use a fox running after me or something and shorten it down a small bit perhaps. I will look into doing this further over the weekend and make a start on Monday.
But after a discussion with my tutor on this matter, I decided to keep the original idea as I was too far gone into this production to walk away from it at that point, so here is what I did next:
I first rejected this idea on my blog right in the beginning, but I’ve decided to do this tutorial again and use this for the introduction of my movie title onto the actual sequence as all movies do. I’ve decided to do it like this:
This is the video here below where I will be doing the movie title presenation from:

I am starting by creating a new composition above here:

And the new composition is created, all ready for work.

A new solid is created and a nice blue background appears.

A new shape layer is added in for this. The shape chosen is a rectangle. This is possibly for the sequence.

The square has been enlarged to about 500. I am trying to keep up with the guy performing this tutorial, but he speaks too fast and the quality of the video is not to perfect standard unfortunately.

A fill has been added to the rectangle. This is only for illustrative purposes only as this color combination is far too insignificant for my taste.

This isn’t too bad a color combination. I might do something with the background color perhaps.

I am now adding in keyframes into the sequence, such as the scale as instructed by the man on the tutorial.

The scaling will begin at a value of around zero and will grow in a matter of seconds or a minute.

The square will grow to 100% around 20 frames later on.

As you can see, 5 seconds later, the square is beginning to inflate.

By looking at the graph editor, there is a linear relationship between the two points. This means that the movement is constant per second as the box grows.

With the two points, I select Easy Ease.

The right hand handle I dragged across using Easy Ease. This was done because to give it a much higher influence than the one previous to make the movement perhaps a bit more interesting.

The left handle I dragged to the very end, making the move far more interesting when tested out in the beginning.

I am now following this video tutorial using Microsoft Edge and I’ve discovered that the video is far clearer than it was using Chromium for some very strange reason. I shall continue the tutorial using that from here on.

I’ve had to set a new keyframe now to carry on making this work.

I’ve dragged the keyframe to the beginning, therefore replacing it initially. I will probably find out it’s purpose for this later on in the tutorial.

I’ve now added a Polystar to this animation. It’s purpose to be discovered in due course.
I am rejecting this as I am finding this and the instructions given to me a bit complicated and will just create my own version of how the title should look. I might do this tutorial at another time perhaps and just conjure up my own version as to how it should look.
Which the production for this has begun here and now.

There is a royal blue background in the composition now.

I’ve added a beautiful blue PNG image of the globe to the composition.

Yesterday I designed a whole new movie title presentation from scratch. I will talk more about how this was done later on.
First, I want to talk a little more about how I am changing the artwork on the title sequence in accordance with the feedback given to me a few weeks ago. First I added this royalty free image to my London sequence.

I also used this sky image as the background as I did with some of the other sequences.

And here is how it looks now:

It looks absolutely fine, no problems at all. Everything is consistent and visible despite the bright colors

It looks so much better than the first London sequence. It was recommended that I added a bit of detail to my sequences, even though they are royalty free images from Google due to the space of timing involved. But still I think it looks really good.
The Rome sequence I thought could do with some bit of freshening up, so I changed it from this:

To this:

The sky background is the same as the London sequence, but the Rome silhouette now accompanies it. It gives the same good significance as the London sequence. I will use this background on a few others to brighten it up a little. The Rome skyline has also changed as well and this is the new image used:

I am going to leave my original styling for some of the sequences though such as the Egypt one for instance.
The Barcelona sequence now for instance, I thought I’d give it a night sky look as it was stated in feedback given to me that I added night scenes as well as day scenes to make it more interesting by giving Barcelona a night sequence. It has gone from looking like this:

To looking like this:

It looks more interesting now in terms of looks I think.
In between Barcelona and Saudi Arabia, I’m leaving exactly as they are as I do think that they do go well together. But the Tel Aviv sequence, I decided to change around a little bit and add the same bright sky as the London sequence and I do think that it looks really good.
The Tel Aviv silhouette used for this sequence below here:

I took this image and painted over the grey areas shown in it such as the watermark on it and took out the white background, transforming it into a PNG file and put it over the sunny background, making it look nice.

Except the typography looks bright now since the colors have gone brighter, so I moved the text down a bit to make it more visible.

Which I did and it looks a lot more nice this way and the text can be seen nicely.

The Tokyo sequence could look a bit more colourful as Japan does, pink blossoms, snow capped mountains etc.
Here is how it looked like before I decided to transform it somewhat:

So I thought that I would add this to the sequence in order to make it more interesting which it does as of now.

The typography had to be moved onto a darker background for this sequence as it was not visible in the bright colors given the brightness of the background, but having moved it all is once again right in the world as far as this goes.
The branches with blossoms used below here:

Most of my original designs looked flat and boring for the original sequences. I’ve decided to change these around to make them look more interesting such as adding features into the skies above the cities in the title sequence. For example, London began by looking like this:

Now looking like this:

This I think gives the sequence good consistency and adds more color to the sequences as they looked plain and boring. The Egypt and Saudi Arabia sequences I left as they were as they looked OK like this and it gave them a deserty kind of feel to them as these countries have deserts in them and they gave good consistency to these sequences.
Most of the cities used in this movie title sequence are royalty free images downloaded from several sources via Google as with the time frame given to me, I did not have much time to do my own illustrations. I might have had more time to accomplish this if I did not do too many tutorials in the beginning, which were worthwhile and I have learnt a lot from all of this, I would have longer time to have accomplished this.

So far it is now looking good, I added 2 new cities to the sequence and taken 2 of them out due to them being inconsistent and pixelated in parts. Where the Christ the Redeemer used to be, has now been replaced with Edinburgh Castle, the silhouette used is shown below here:

I think that this looks better now and far more realistic.

I like the sunset surrounding the castle and this gives Edinburgh a more greater consistency surrounding the castle in my opinion. The typography has got good visibility as well and I think it works well enough in my opinion.
I decided to end it with replacing the Havana sequence below

with Dublin instead as shown below:

To look at the image, it looks tiny. But I Photoshopped it and made it look like a Higher Resolution image as shown in the illustration below and this is how it looks now:

To look at it now, it looks really nice and realistic, especially the sky sequence, a twilight sky surrounding this. Looks good I think compared to the plain and boring Havana sequence.
Here are some examples of video sequences that have gone into the sequence and the rejected pieces as well with annotations. There are far too many to talk about, but any changes made when you watch these videos and watch the final outcome, any changes made are purely for the best and right for my title sequence:
1. Auckland
This is the first Auckland sequence using bold colors. Looking at it looks dark, so I replaced it with adding features to the sky in this video sequence below here:
I like the way the sky now looks as it makes it look more realistic and really brings the city out in my opinion.
2. Beijing
For the same reason as Auckland, it looks a bit dark in contrast, so here is what I did instead:
Made it look a touch brighter by adding a nice purple texture to the bottom bringing out the city of Beijing to life.
3. Barcelona
This to me looks boring and a bit quick in areas, so here is the final outcome:
I gave this sequence a night time starry night outlook, which I think works really well. It might be a bit dark but I think that it works well enough regardless.
Here is a link to my YouTube channel where my videos are linked at and as stated that there are far too many videos to talk about, so for convenience sake, I will leave the link for my video channel and the answer that I am going to give is simple, any changes made here are all for the best and beneficial to my movie title sequence:
Inspiration for my skies in the sequences:

This picture of the Sunset or Sunup has inspired the design for my Auckland and Sydney sequences amongst others.

This picture of Edinburgh Castle with a sunset background has inspired my design for the Edinburgh sequence and it gives a good feel to it.
This is the music track that is the main title for the sequence which I think works really well for the video and the action surrounding it:
I downloaded this video via a YouTube uploader and saved it as an MP3 file to accompany my sequence. I think it is fast paced and works well with my sequence in general.
I even added sound effects to the sequence to make it look as if I am running away from both the Police and Howling Dogs alike. Here they are:
Please put these here.
The finished sequence is complete which I am now VERY happy to say. Here it is in it's infernal glory:
I think it is nice and colorful and it has hints of Saul Bass in it in terms of colors, music and action. The silhouettes as mentioned are royalty free images downloaded from Google as this was easier for me to accomplish in terms of time and other assignment commitments. I think that for my first official movie title sequence that I am proud of what I have accomplished and proud of my efforts in this case.
I decided to revisit the first exercise given to me in the beginning of the 4th semester, which was to produce 4 movie mockup movie posters of the same title name and using 4 images from the internet which were to be the same throughout. Well I decided with a heavy heart to revisit this exercise again, but putting my own stamp on things, I am only creating 1 poster and using 4 images in it. I will use 2 images to incorporate inside the typography and here is how I am going to go about doing it:
Here are all the images I am going to use for this entire exercise:

Image research over, the production begins:

A4 document all ready for me to create my poster.

The first image goes into the document on Photoshop.

I moved the image to sit on the bottom of the page which looks nicely now.

I am going to remove the sky from the London skyline. So I am masking it from the sky to the buildings.

I pressed the Q button on the keyboard and this creates a quick mask of the subject.

And the sky is all ready for removal from the image.

And the sky has gone.

And the replacement is to be added in.
And it is this image as taken by me last Saturday of a sky texture.

I will choose my own image for this exercise.

I will manipulate this a little bit before adding it to the document.

Which has now been added to the document as part of the texture process.

I am brightening up the sky via filters.

I have darkened the image as this is a film title which is a bit of a thriller.

This looks urbanised now which gives it an interesting feel.

Image 2 is going in now which will be part of the background.

The image has now been blended in and it is looking more and more interesting all the time.

Image 3 went in and pretty much matches the subject and nature of the film, a grungy gang warfare type of movie.

The typography work begins.

This is a totally separate document, I am using the Union Jack for this sequence.

And multiplying it over the text.

I am planning to put this over the word story as well.

And here it goes, over the typography.

I am using the flag of Pakistan as well for this, as the movie is based on 2 rival East London gangs, the English and the Pakistanis.

I am doing the very same as what I am doing with the Union Jack.

And it is looking quite nicely now, would look better once finished though.

The Pakistani flag will also appear underneath the Union Jack in the word story, representing the nationalities of the two gangs.

The flags are in place, all ready to be edited.

A layer has been covered in white, as to show only the text underneath this.

It is all masked and ready to be visible.

Which has just happened now. Interesting.

The white must now come out from around the text now, so that the title can be a PNG image as opposed to it being a JPG image.

Now the flags must come out that are sticking out over the text.

Which is happening now and looking interesting.

One by one…

It is coming along and looking good.

And now the flags only appear inside the text and only appear inside the text and makes the chromed text look colourful.

The only problem remains is that of the white parts visible inside the text as shown in the D, A, O and R respectively.

And all these have now been taken out and it looks like a real PNG image.

To get the type to match the color of the poster, I changed it to Black and White.

And I think that it looks more interesting and matches really well as I think that the colors of the 2 flags look out of place here.

The poster is almost at a finished standard and it is looking well I think.

The mock director’s name goes into the document.

The tracking looks better here I think now.

Mock actors then appear into the poster.

As well as a brief synopsis of the movie.
Here is the finished result:

Except it looks broken in parts of the typography, I must fix this up before I make it the final outcome. But on the whole a good job done. And this has been done by the way. Let me elaborate:

I am starting the typography again. I am using the font Haettenschweiler this time.

The production is in progress. It is looking better than it has been.

The Union Jack now covers the typography. I personally think that this looks better with just one whole flag on it rather than 2.

The Union Flag of Britain now covers the whole of the type, deleting it from outside of the text. The colors make the poster look weird, so I will make it black and white, which would contrast nicely in the design.

The Pakistan flag now covers the top part of the poster. It has been multiplied, so the white part of the flag is unrecognisable, but I do think that the green works well in the poster. I might now do another version with the colors showing in the Union Jack as well and see how that looks.

I also think that this works well also now that the colors are showing in the typography in the movie title. It gives a really good significance. I am going to save this version also.
Here are the two finished brilliant outcomes:

This is the updated version of the poster created by me. It looks really good now that I've injected some color into it i.e. The Pakistani flag. I actually think it looks cool. I experimented with the idea of showing the colors into the British flag also just to give it an exciting kick, and here it is:

Looks good, but I prefer the one with the Black and White typography I think as that works better. A good job nonetheless though.
INSPIRATION FOR THIS IDEA

I found inspiration for this new idea for my mockup movie poster from West Side Story. This was a movie based on 2 rival gangs in the West Side of New York City, whereas my movie poster is a movie based on two rival gangs in the East End of London, hence the name East End Story.
West Side Story had a forbidden romance between 2 people from the American and Puerto Rican nationalities.

My poster has a friendship between 2 men from Britain and Pakistan like, whose relatives were leaders of the gangs ruining the East London community.
I thought I would do one final experimentation with this little exercise and create another mockup movie poster. This time, my poster title is A Passage to Somalia. Inspired by A Passage to India below here:

Images used for this exercise below here:

I found this process easy enough to do rather than putting up loads of screen shots detailing my every move and I came up with this result here:

I happen to think that I did a really good job here and I added a gradient over the overall poster itself to make it look more realistic and I happen to think that it does. I really think that I did a good enough job here and I found this whole process easy enough to do.
THE WHOLE ASSIGNMENT IN GENERAL
I was asked to develop an idea for a movie title sequence. This was difficult and harrowing for me to do as this was a whole new lease of life for me in the graphic design world as I found this was irrelevant to graphic design in the start.
But as the unit progressed, I found it intensely easy to do as I did a whole load of tutorials and blogged them as I went along, keeping and rejecting ideas and stating why. I found this unit challenging and this was when I discovered After Effects, which I only began using at the final semester and found it overwhelming and taking a bit of getting used to, which little by little, I am doing and it gives me a whole new feel if I was to do this project again from scratch.
The feedback given to me as far as the movie title goes was positive and was enjoyed by all that viewed it. I myself think that I did a good job even though I could have done my own designs as far as the buildings were concerned, but maybe if I had more time, I would have done this greatly. I will reflect this for possible future units if assigned this project again.
